Let’s talk about Airtel’s new AM Global Pay Card — a bold and intriguing move by Airtel Zambia. Especially considering that previous attempts to launch similar card services have struggled to gain traction. Even MTN’s virtual card offering hasn’t delivered meaningful results in the Zambian market. This makes Airtel’s renewed push all the more interesting — is it a strategic pivot, or another shot in the dark?

The idea is: a virtual card tied to your Airtel Money wallet that lets you pay for services and goods online globally. In theory, it’s a win: easier access to Netflix, Amazon, or that foreign web service you’ve been eyeing. And Airtel did team up with Mastercard to roll this out. Connecting Africa

But here’s the catch — there’s a rumour (and some user chatter) that 10 % commission is being charged per transaction. In one Facebook post, someone wrote:

“There is a 10% charge applied for the amount being transacted when making an online payment.” Facebook

If that’s true, it kills the whole value prop. Let me break it down:

  • Cost advantage lost: Paying 10 % just to use the card makes many purchases unviable. It becomes cheaper to use alternatives (credit cards, forex, etc.).
  • User backlash: People don’t like hidden or high fees. It erodes trust.
  • Market competitiveness: Other virtual cards don’t float such high fees — this could price Airtel out.

Personally i rushed to create the card for one big purpose, to pay for my Starlink. Alas the card is not recognised for Starlink payments. I asked Airtel support and i was told the card doesnt work for some sites. “Virtual card can only be used pay online international merchants”

So my take? Don’t jump onboard until you clarify the fee structure. If they are going to charge 10 %, then this card is more of a trap than a tool. Hold off, ask Airtel to spell out the fine print, and pressure them for transparency.
