How to Calculate ZRA PAYE in Zambia for Year 2025
If you’ve ever looked at your payslip and wondered, “Where did my money go?” — you’re not alone. One of the common deductions from salaries in Zambia is ZRA PAYE, which stands for Pay As You Earn. It’s a tax that the government collects from your income before it even reaches your hands.
Every year, there are adjustments depending on the government’s fiscal policy. For today, let’s break down how ZRA PAYE is calculated in 2025, in the simplest way possible.
Step 1: Know Your Income
Start with your total monthly income. This includes your salary, bonuses, allowances, and any other payments you receive from your employer.
Step 2: Understand the 2025 Tax Bands
In 2025, the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) will use the following monthly tax bands:
First K5,100 – No tax
K5,100.01 to K7,100 – 20% tax
K7,100.01 to K9,200 – 30% tax
Above K9,200 – 37% tax
Step 3: Example Calculation
Let’s say your total income is K12,000:
First K5,100 → 0% = K0
Next K2,000 → 20% = K400
Next K2,100 → 30% = K630
Remaining K2,800 → 37% = K1,036
Total PAYE = K0 + K400 + K630 + K1,036 = K2,066
So, K2,066 will be sent to ZRA as tax, and the rest is yours.
Step 4: Other Deductions
Apart from PAYE, you might also see NAPSA (pension) or NHIMA (health insurance) deductions. These are calculated separately from PAYE.
