MyMTN app for Zambia boasts to be a one-stop shop for mobile users. According to the Play Store, it’s even “free to use on MTN’s network—no data or airtime needed.” Sounds perfect, right? Well, not exactly.

Many users have reported that the app doesn’t work when they’re out of data, contradicting that “zero-rated” claim. And once it does open (slowly, I might add), you’re often asked to re-verify your number—even if you just used it a few hours ago.

Functionally, the MyMTN app only supports one number at a time. That’s a big issue for many Zambians who have both a dual SIM mobile phone with two MTN numbers, usually one for work and the other for personal use.

Want to buy special 10 Kwacha 10GB bundles for your router SIM? You can’t use the app to buy for a router SIM. You’ll have to physically remove the SIM and insert it into your phone. This is quiet frustrating and far from user-friendly.

Worse still, MTN has two separate apps: MyMTN and MTN MoMo. Compare this to Airtel, which has smartly integrated its services and mobile money into one smooth app. MTN is trailing behind in that regard.

There are positives, though. The app allows you to check your data and call usage for up to 30 days, which is a great tool for managing your mobile consumption. It also lets you sign in with Google or Facebook—something we rarely see in other telecom apps. These small conveniences do matter though, and keep MTN going.

But overall, MyMTN feels incomplete. The design isn’t bad, but the experience is slowed down by frequent verifications, lack of router support, and the need to install a second app for mobile money.

In a digital era where users expect seamless, all-in-one service, MTN needs to step up. Integration, speed, and support for multiple devices would take MyMTN from average to excellent.
