In an effort to harmonize phone shortcodes or USSD, ZICTA has given a directive to all mobile phone providers in Zambia to implement a new range of shortcodes. This means that across all networks same shortcodes will be used.

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD code) or shortcode is a communications protocol used by GSM cellular telephones to communicate with the mobile network operator’s computers.

The USSD code is very useful for individuals with no smartphone running an application to check for bank balances or do bank transactions. Also, these shortcodes allow for doing Mobile transactions as well as checking talk time and data balance.

Here are a few shortcodes Lensesview as learned off from checking with Airtel and MTN numbers;

*115# for Mobile money across all networks

*117# for buying minutes and data across all networks

*118# to borrow airtime and pay later
