ZICTA Award Fourth Mobile Provider to Angola’s Unitel

ZICTA awarded the fourth telecommunication mobile provider in Zambia to UZI Zambia Limited. The major shareholder of UZI is Unitel International Holdings from Amsterdam Netherlands. This is according to the Zambia Information & Communications Technology Authority issues notification of award for a network license under the international market segment and a service license under the National Market Segment.
Unitel will operate under UZI Zambia Limited that has been issued with the notification and the company is expected to plow in $350m USD. A further 450 direct employment opportunities is anticipated to support the mobile provider operations in Zambia.
The company intends to deploy LTE technology countrywide for their network which would fully support both 4G and 5G – ZICTA
Unitel International Holdings B.V. formerly known as Jadeium BV was established in 2015 but has since seen its presence in Angola, Sao Tome and its Principe, Cape Verde and Portugal. In Angola Isabel Dos Satos (richest woman in Africa net worth 2.6 Billion USD) has a 25% shares in Angola Unitel.
UZI Zambia (Unitel) will compete with the current market leaders MTN Zambia, Airtel and Zamtel. Unitel investment has also earmarked presence in unserved and underserved areas countrywide with a deployment of 100 universal access sites.
